SUMMER SCHOOL 2026 (8 - 12yrs)

Smikle Dance Studio

Creative & Contemporary Dance, Theatre & Performance Six-Day Intensive Summer School Smikle Dance Studio, Brighton & Hove This summer, join us for a unique creative dance and performance experience where children can move, imagine, make and perform together. Led by industry professionals, the summer school is rooted in movement and creativity, with playful theatrical elements used to spark ideas and storytelling. Each day will include: Creative warm-ups, games and technique-based movement Guided improvisation and choreographic tasks Exploring ideas through the body, space and imagination Story boarding and world building, dance and theatrical sequences inspired by set themes, images and the group's own collective ideas. The focus is on expressive movement, confidence and creativity. Children are encouraged to explore how they move, make choices, work together and develop their own ideas and stories in a supportive, nurturing and friendly environment. The Process During the six days, participants will work closely with professional dancer, teacher and choreographer Lee Smikle and guest teachers to create, choreograph and design a unique performance from scratch. The group will not only develop the dance and theatrical content, but will also collaborate on costume ideas, set design and transforming Studio 2 into a mini theatre space. On the final day, participants will present an hour-long performance showcase, sharing their creative work with family, friends and guests. By the end of the week, participants will have experienced the full creative journey – from initial ideas through choreography, design and rehearsal, to a final polished performance. Who is this for? Suitable for children and young people aged 8–16 who enjoy moving, being creative and performing. This will be an intensive (but fun!) process, so participants should have some dance or performance experience, or be fully ready to dive in with energy and commitment. We're looking for curious, enthusiastic team players who are excited to explore, create and collaborate. No specific style or level required – just a willingness to take risks, support others and be part of something special. Important Note Before Booking: The focus for each week is slightly different in terms of creative challenge, pace and expectation. We advise that if you are not already a member of Smikle Dance Studio, you book the week most appropriate to your child's age. However, younger dancers (aged 11+) with strong contemporary dance experience and creative maturity may be suitable for Week 2 with the older group. Dancers will be challenged according to their strengths during each week. If in doubt, please contact us first before booking.
